Previous years - case studies
Many organisations got in touch with us and told us what they got up to in 2007 and here is a selection of what they did. If you would like us to feature your organisation on the World Quality Day site then please email Vince Desmond, CQI Executive Director Business Development.
ESL Defence
ESL Defence raised awareness about their activities on World Quality Day by reporting in their electronic newsletter. Below is their excerpt:
ESL Defence Marks World Quality Day
The second Thursday of November was World Quality Day, and ESL Defence celebrated with a company-wide contest. Each employee was forwarded a list of quality-related tenets derived from American quality guru W. Edwards Deming's famous 14 points for management, which were devised to transform industry. Employees were asked to identify which one of the listed points was not Deming's. One prize-winner was drawn from among those who correctly identified which item did not belong on the list.
More than a dozen employees participated in the contest to mark World Quality Day, an event which aims to celebrate companies' commitment to quality. Engineering Quality and Drawing Office Manager Neil Peattie presented the lucky winner, Ray Bishop of ESL's Production department, with a bagful of prizes from the Chartered Quality Institute. Neil noted, "World Quality Day is an opportunity to demonstrate how quality affects our daily lives. For example, our new Lean Six Sigma program can be linked to many of Deming's 14 points."

We held a 'lunch and learn' session which was reasonably well attended and generated some lively discussion. Specific challenges around local requirements and in general, building competence and capability in a developing country situation, are of particular interest to ourselves.
My personal recommendation would be to raise awareness of this event sooner in the year to enable adequate planning. The downloadable poster [from the CQI] was well used by ourselves and more along this line would help promote the event for organisations.

I am pleased to recognise World Quality Day as a reminder that all of us have a part to play in achieving success for [our company]. Quality is not the responsibility of a selected few; we all have a role to play.
Effective quality management practices are the foundation for establishing the processes which will be executed by competent personnel in delivering world class projects. I regard the quality function to be an essential support to our project engineers and contractors so we can count on our facilities to deliver on revenue year after year.
John Andersen, Project Director, BSW/A
Any initiative that raises awareness amongst the team of the importance of getting quality management right is clearly something to be encouraged.

I was very pleased that the CQI campaign for World Quality Day in 2007 enabled me to promote quality internally within our company. The CQI poster and the promotional pack were extremely helpful and much appreciated.
The promotional pack, including a few small additions, was presented to an employee who through out the year demonstrated a high degree of commitment to quality. This presentation was photographed and a small article will be included in the next issue of the global organisation's employee magazine.

The CQI poster was put up around the factory and displayed on our plasma screen. The poster, world quality day globe logo and a short description of World Quality Day and European Quality Week were posted on our global Intranet page.

We are a small fabricator company with around 15 employees, the response we got from our customers was very positive. We analysed which customers we thought would benefit from the information received in the packs supplied by the CQI.
Using the items in the packs last year we were able to add items which we normally give to our customers, eg calendar and a diary. It has raised the awareness internally of the need for quality and how it effects all of us on a daily basis.

This is a big year for us as far as quality is concerned. We are going for the ISO 9001:2000 certification this year (April), so quality is the buzz word for us at the moment. Using World Quality Day this year would be perfect for us to reiterate the importance of quality and quality tools in our business.

Our World Quality day initiative was the start of our business improvement training for all staff. I also decided to Purchase tins of "Quality Street" to raise the awareness of this day and the link to Quality via our improvement programme.
This year I plan several projects linked to Lean manufacturing, which will involve 5S training and Kaizen events. All staff will have completed a 1 hour Business improvement induction module which also focuses on raising Quality awareness throughout the organisation.

The day did seem to go very well; it inspired the quality analysts who enjoyed the afternoon focusing on the background and theories of quality management.
